Is it true that Abraham Lincoln was one of the most despised presidents

during his time in office? I'm NOT talking about in the South, that obvious. I mean in the North he was despised, not to mention chided and ridiculed. Is this true?
Again, I'm talking about in the NORTH.

Its obvious that the nation was in a civil war, of course the South hated him.
About those Indians that were executed, Lincoln basicaly save 264 of them, instead of executing all 303. He had a civil war to deal with and he probably didn't want any more dissent within the North. So in my book, he did the best he could in the situation, the fact that he saved 264 says that.

I think Slavery is wrong, morally, and politically. I desire that it should be no further spread in these United States, and I should not object if it should gradually terminate in the whole Union.

He first mission was to preserve the Union, if he could get rid of slavery while he was at it then he would which is what he did. So despise him if you want, you only show ignorance.
 
I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised. It was a contentious time in the US.
 
abraham lincoln was not a great president and he didnt free any slaves. the only reason he signed the emancipation proclamation was to preserve the union. he was racist, and i dont know if I count but i despise him.
 
Don't know if "despised" is the right word. Seems too strong to me. But, he was unpopular. History, however, shows that he was a great President.
 
Maybe not despised, but he wasn't exactly really popular.

That's usually the case with leaders that history tells us were great.

Perhaps there's hope for Bush, Blair and Brown yet....

Lincoln ordered a mass execution of Sioux Indians back in 1862. Many people don't know about this and would, I suspect, view Lincoln differently if they did. He may be called the great Emancipator by some, but he is the only President to ever order a mass execution. He is not well-received among Native Americans for the reasons outlined below:

"Information below tells how President Lincoln and Minnesota Governor Alexander Ramsey set out to exterminate Indians from their home land.

Authorities in Minnesota asked President Lincoln to order the immediate execution of all 303 Indian males found guilty. Lincoln was concerned with how this would play with the Europeans, whom he was afraid were about to enter the war on the side of the South. He offered the following compromise to the politicians of Minnesota: They would pare the list of those to be hung down to 39. In return, Lincoln promised to kill or remove every Indian from the state and provide Minnesota with 2 million dollars in federal funds. Remember, he only owed the Sioux 1.4 million for the land.

So, on December 26, 1862, the Great Emancipator ordered the largest mass execution in American History, where the guilt of those to be executed was entirely in doubt. Regardless of how Lincoln defenders seek to play this, it was nothing more than murder to obtain the land of the Santee Sioux and to appease his political cronies in Minnesota."
 
Yes ... he is on the all-time most loved and hated ... he enacted the draft and an income tax on every citizen in-order to pay for the war. Sounds kind of familiar hu?
