Is it too late for me to go amateur?

I am a 28 year old guy with one-year experience with the electric guitar (not a lot), and I'm switching to the bass guitar because I think it fits me better (oh, and I have little musical experience prior to that year). Now that I've been playing again, I realize I have improved (much to my shock), and I expect to improve more with daily practice. I'm probably no virtuoso, but I believe I can become rather decent (even good) with practice.

With that in mind, do you think I could become an amateur rock bassist, say, by age 30? Is it too late to try to find a rock band and go to a few gigs here and there?

The key word here is AMATEUR. I do not intend to try it professionally because I already have a career going on. Maybe if due to some miracle I become a desired musician by record labels I could think about changing profession (but, come on, that's just huge wishful thinking; it just doesn't happen).

Maybe it is a weird question, but I wonder if I "fit" as a rock musician even when I'm about to turn 30. Many people who start, even as amateurs, are way younger than me (I know three people who already play something rather decently and they are in their early 20's), so I'm already at a disadvantage. Also, I've heard extensively that adults are not very good at learning new motor skills (clue: fingerings, scales, fingerpicking, etc).

I don't have experience in the rock music scene, so I just want to hear opinions and experiences about this. Maybe even a real life case about a person you know who is in kind of the same situation as I am would be enlightening.

P.S. Why didn't I start earlier? I ask myself the same question. I shouldn't have.
