Is it scientifically possible that the universe could be similar to a computer

generated virtual reality.....? ....world created by beings superior to us or even created by us, so trying to make sense of it would be comparable to a computer character in one of our own computer games trying to understand pixels, programming and binary code etc??
 
There was a film based on this theory, wasn't there ... 'The Matrix'? The only flaw in this argument is that Tom and Jerry don't sit opposite me in McDonalds ....
