Is it safe to use acrylic paint on a fly mask/will it wash off?

I really wanted to buy my horse one of the fly masks with the funny eyes painted on them. I didn't find them at my local tack shop, and I'm hesitant about buying online, so I bought a regular one figuring I'd paint it later. Has anyone painted their own fly mask before? Which paint did you use, and did it rub off?
 
the problem with acrilic is that wherever it is, they can't see through that part. Spray Paint might work better, I think. Horse.com has those silly fly masks for cheap,though! and awsome defender ones.
