My mom and I are always arguing over whether to ride my bike on the sidewalk or not. I say that if you are in the bike lane you are very safe since there are no pedestrians, it's a smoother ride, and cars pulling out of driveways are more aware of you. I also live in a very bike friendly area and drivers are often considerate of bikers. My mom always gives me a long spiel about how riding a bike on the road is just as dangerous as riding a motorcycle and that she thinks that an elderly or drunk driver is going to swerve and hit me. I insist that riding on the sidewalk is just as dangerous because of bumpy sidewalks, drivers pulling out of driveways, and pedestrians. What is the truth because I finally want to settle this with my mom.
