My family of four (two adults, and my brother and I who are both teens) are planning a trip soon to Cuba, and the only thing I am apprehensive about is how much freedom we have as foreigners to travel and explore. I do not want to be lead by the hand everywhere to typical tourist locations because I would love to explore local areas that are less affected by resorts and tourism, which are more closed off from the reality of Cuban lifestyle. Would it be safe to walk around and explore? Where would you recommend doing or checking out in the Santa Clara area? It can be walking distance or in a taxi. Thank you so much in advance! My main reason for wanting to branch away from the resort is to explore, learn more, and of course it would be a wonderful photography opportunity!
I am far from being fluent in Spanish but I can say greetings, food, help, and other basic necessities.
