Is it safe to change your tongue ring to a shorter bell if you're not swelling?

I got my tongue pierced the other day and it didn't swell very much at all and it's just hard to talk because the bar is so long. I understand we go with a longer bar in case of swelling but since mine isn't do you think it'd be safe to change to a shorter one in a few days?
