Is it really necessary to charge my new phone for the recommended 12 hours?

I just bought a Nokia N97 mobile and I'm really excited - I can't wait for it to be delivered tomorrow. I'm going out tomorrow evening and wondered if it's necessary to charge it for the amount of time it says in the manual. Something like 12 hours.
