MY CAR STOPPED ON ME AND WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE COMPRESSOR IN THE CAR, BUT NOT THE AIR COMPRESSER. THEY TOLD ME IT WILL BE 3700.00 FOR A USED ONE AND 5000.00 FOR A NEW ONE. I KNOW THE DEALERS ARE GONNA CHARGE YOU TRIPLE BUT IS IT REALLY THAT EXPENSIVE?
i have a 2002 toyota corolla and my car broke down and when i brought it to the dealership they told me it was the compressor, which when i asked what that was, they told me i basically needed a whole new engine. they want 3700.00 for a used and 5000.00 for a new one. is it worth it to pay that much or should i just invest in a new car?

First, turn off the cap locks, stop yelling and take a deep breath!

Then, ask them if they said "engine compression." That is probably what was said. If you have lost engine compression, then a new , used, or re-built motor is in your future. 3K to 5K (and above) is an expected price for an engine.

What exactly are you referring to? The "compressor in the car but not the air compressor" - the A/C compressor? a turbocharger perhaps?
$3700 for used and $5000 for new is a lot of money for ANY kind of vehicle "compressor."
Try and get a more specific description of what you need.

If it is the a/c compressor, it may have failed in a way that comtaminated the entire system with compressor oil. In that case, you would be replaceing basically the entire system. Depending on the make, this could hit that price range, and the labor would be quite expensive as well.

As a mechanic I am confused. You say not the air compressor? There are many types of compressors on a vehicle. Not knowing what type of vehicle and what type of "compressor" This will be a very difficult question to answer. Get more information, Get the make a model of the vehicle. Find out specifically what they are talking about. Then re-post the question and I will let you know what a fair price would be. I live in a different part of the country so our prices might be higher or lower. Good luck and remember not all mechanics are ripoffs.
