Is it really bad to jump into an exercise routine?

I exercise rarely and it is hard for me to stay motivated when I pase myself and build up on the exercise. I would rather start well out of my comfort zone and be sore for a few days or weeks until my body catches up with the work out I am doing. For instance I would like to start running every day from now on. I have horrible knees and with the current condition they are in (its been about 4 years since I had surgery on both and taught myself how to walk again) I would like to just do it, they will ache a little before they get better. Plus I figure since I will need new knees in the future why not just work them hard to get to the shape I need to be in to be healthy. I am about 60lbs over weight according to my BMI. Any help my fellow Yahoo Answer-ers, is this a good idea to shock my body with sudden exercise and let it catch up?
