Is it really against the law to drive by yourself with just 'L' license?

I live in British Columbia and I am 18 but still dont even have my L. But I want to buy a car so I can drive to college. Suppose I get my L now. Do I still need to wait a year before I can drive by myself without supervision? And what will happen if I get pulled over by a cop having only my L and driving alone?
 
You can't buy a car with your L license

You will be charged with driving without a license
