Is it possible to tether a phone free or not?

Ok, I need to finally know!

Is it or is it not possible to tether a Verizon cell phone with internet to a macbook for free?

As far as I know it is possible in general to tether, however Verizon charges a fee. Are there certain phones out there that allow me to get around this fee? If so, what are these phones? And will the internet run decently or will it be dreadfully slow?

There are two types of tethering:

1. Verizon Mobile Broadband Connect. This method does require a $49.99 fee to tether, but it's pretty fast. It comes with a one-month free trial. You have the option of adding/removing the feature at will, and will only be charged a prorated fee for the time it is on the account. The feature has a 5 GB cap.

2. ISP-based tethering. This method is (potentially) free, depending on the service you use. A service I use is freedialup.org, with the access number 603-371-5050. This option is considerably slower than MBB Connect, but it's definitely not unbearable for basic web browsing. Stay away from YouTube if you decide to use this option.

This feature will use minutes unless it's after 9 PM, a weekend, or unless you added this number to your Friends and Family list.
