Is it possible to sell a new verizon cell phone that I got for renewing my contract?

I agreed to renew my contract for another 2 years and got a Smartphone for very cheap. I prefer to keep my old phone, and I want to sell the new one.

I have not activated it yet. Do I have to activate it, make a test call, then deactivate it to clean the ESN before I sell it?
