Is it possible to restore/make usable an iPhone after a failed jailbreak?

Hey everyone,
I've been using an iPhone 3G, jailbroken and unlocked, on the T-Mobile network for a while now. I hadn't bothered to have the OS software updated because I didn't want to have to fiddle around with the jailbreak software. Well the other day, I finally decided that I wanted to update my phone, but this meant getting the appropriate jailbreak software (I was going to use redsnow). It was a while since I had to do any of this, and I failed to realize that I needed to first have my phone updated properly through iTunes THEN use the jailbreak. Instead, I used redsnow while my phone was still running on an older OS version 3.x.

Now I am stuck with a phone that can't get passed the initial boot-up. I tried restoring it via recovery mode and iTunes, but it failed multiple times (Error code 1002). The same thing happens when I try restoring it on another computer.

Is there any way, aside from taking it to Apple (which would still get me nowhere), that I can recover this phone or am I left with a very expensive brick?

Any and all insight will be greatly appreciated!
Lucy, thanks for the response, but as I stated, I have tried putting the phone in DFU (recovery mode) and restoring in iTunes multiple times, but the process will go all the way to the end and then fail, giving me an error code of 1002.
