Is it possible to replace a Verizon cellphone on a monthly plan with a Verizon

Pay as You Go cellphone? I'm having problems with the cell phone i currently have and want to replace it. However, I do not have the money to purchase a brand new phone. I've seen Pay as You Go phones form Verizon at my local Walmart for $20. Is it possible for me to buy the Pay as You Go phone and just switch my number to this cell phone?
