Is it possible to put mountain bike brakes on a bmx bike?

I am building a cheap bmx bike and right now all I dont have is brakes and grips. I have an old mountian bike that I was thinking about taking off the brakes and putting them on the bmx bike. Do you think it would work? And is there a big difference between the different types of brakes i could buy in case that doesnt work? (caliper, u-brakes, etc)
