Is it possible to put an older model automatic transmission in a 99 dodge ram or

does it have to be same style? May have to replace my 99 dodge ram transmission. Just wondering if an older model that bolted to a 318 from mid 80's to early 90's will work or not
 
an older model 904 will ft it but you wont have the overdrive part of it,and you,ll get a check engine light all the time on it,but it will fit it,it will run real high rpms though for the lack of overdrive,we did it on one but we also went back to the older type ignition system basic electronic ignition,so we don't have no check engine light at all,its also running minus the function of the main computer,our ignition system is from the mid 70,s its primitive but it works,before id do that though id find a good transmission for that truck,good luck
