Is It Possible To Play A Blue Ray DVD Movie With A Regular DVD Player?

I'm going to be lending some DVDs to a friend, so I need some help here. Will a Blue Ray DVD play in a regular DVD Player. I know the DVD Player will not play the Blue Ray DVD in Blue Ray quality, but will it at least play it, just in a different(regular) quality?
