is it possible to get spyware of your computer without losing anything on it?

i dont know much about computers and I got something on my dell, it turned the desktop back ground to a bio sign saying my privacy is in danger! I had to go buy a new computer cause I have online schooling and all of my assignments are on my other computer and i need to get them back!! any advise???
