Is it possible to cross the Swiss-German border on back roads or streets on a bicycle?

I want to ride from Zurich, Switzerland to Kandern, Germany and back to visit a friend on my bicycle while I'm overseas. Do smaller country roads cross the border as well? Will I be stopped at a border crossing? Will I be allowed through on just a bicycle? Thanks!
