Is it possible to claim business expenses when you didn't make any business

income for that tax year? In early December of 2009 I lost my full-time job. So I went to an IT recruiting agency I'd worked for before and they hooked me up with a contract job. I purchased a laptop, printer, etc, to use with that job but I didn't actually make any money at it before the end of the year. I've worked contract before and claimed expenses, but can I claim those purchases if I've got no paperwork to show any business activity?
