ever since i could remember, since i was a child, i had a really strange looking toungue. it's lumpy and irregular and looks cracked in some places. there is also a white film some of which i could remove my brushing but some that seems like it's part of the skin. i also had a terrible sore throat for the past month but it seems to be gone now altho i still cough a bit. my glands were really swollen and i was in a lot of pain but i took amoxycillin for a week and it got better. i have also, for the longest time, noticed strange bumps on the back of my tongue. they are regular flesh color and make my breath smell and taste strange. when i brush on the back of my tongue with my electric toothbrush i get either blood or pus. the problem is that i have had this as long as i can remember, and what is also strange is that the irregularities on my tongue are noit permanent. there are times when my tongue smoothes out and stays flesh colored without the film, and times (like now) when it's a mess, looking really diseased. i have noticed also that the lumps on the back of the tongue either do not dissapear as often as the irregularities on the rest of my tongue, or not at all. i'm 21, and pretty stumped. if it was cancer, it would be permanent. if it was herpes it would have sores, which i don't. maybe HPV? i don't really know. i do not drink or smoke or take drugs, i am also not on any medication. when i was younger i was thinking the toungue could be a result of acid reflux of some sort, because the cracks seem to come in waves.

Any help would be appreciated!

Wow it sounds irregular. Do you think it thrush? You could have a fungal infection in your mouth, all the symtoms seem to fit that especially the white film that you can remove (at least some of it). I would also say also laryngitis, but I don;t think it creates a white film on the tongue. I have one more thing for you to check but I can't remember the name. Do you have bad breath?

I would do a internet search on thrush, you can find pictures on-line and compare it to what you have.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, thanks to the two of you for replying. Yes, as I mentioned there is a bad taste, and I took your advice and looked up thrush, legaleagle, and even though the symptoms sound similar, there seem to be two things not connected. The information I've read says that the white patches can be removed, which is not true with me, and that thrush usually resolves itself within a few months at most. I've had this probably since I was about 11 or 12. Which is 9-10 years. This is impossible for thrush. I have always had a problem with acid though. And I keep coming back to this. I always have heartburn and I always feel like stomach fluid is coming up. So I am thinking acid reflux, which I'll discuss with a doctor as soon as I get insurance back. The only time I remember talking to my dentist about it, a few years back, she told me it's normal, and that I just need to brush my tongue more often. But the thing is I rub that thing like crazy, till it's basically raw, and it won't come off. And if I could just show you guys, it's awful. I mean I have augmented the way I speak and laugh so people don't see my tongue. When I pull it out, the entire edge of it is broken and cracked and lumpy and the taste buds on it also look broken. It looks as if I took a knife to it and then dumped sulfuric acid on it. And it gets tender and feels as if I've burned it sometimes. I need to get to the bottom of it, because I feel like something is wrong.
