Is it possible for the same check to be cashed or attempted to be cashed more than once?

I sent a check to help out a relative, and told them to wait on doing it, but they must have misunderstood or something and cashed it anyhow. So I've got a non available fund fee. Can he re-cash the same check or do I need to send him a new one?
