Is it OK to use cleaned out 5 gal. paint buckets to plant a container garden in?

If the paint was all cleaned out, would they be alright to use? Would any remaining chemicals leach out into the plants or edible fruits?

I wouldn't put anything I was going to eat into buckets that held paint in them, even a plant that grows food. You can get food grade buckets from a bakery (like the one in your local grocery store). Most bakeries will give them out free, some may charge you a small fee.

I would use the paint buckets to store things like sand and ice melt. Its better to be safe than to get some kind of chemical poisoning especially if its via homegrown veggies.

Most decorative plants would probably do just fine in the buckets.

It should be fine for most plants, although if you're trying to grow edible fruit in them you might want to line the bucket with some sort of coating, say, varnish (oh, the irony!) or just a plastic bag.

Be careful with the drainage of your soil, as leaving plants soaking in water for several days will probably damage their root systems due to mold and all that, so ensure that you have drainage holes that don't go anywhere that water might be destructive.

Yup sure is. The containers are hard plastic so if you have cleaned them out well enough they should be fine.

Don't plan on using those buckets for anything else though. The reason is it's best if you will drill some holes in the bottom to allow water to drain through otherwise you risk having the plants sit in water.
