Is it ok to have either an Aprilia RSV1000 or Yamaha R6 as a first big bike?

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is following suit and deciding to get a bike like me. I've been riding bikes for a while now and currently ride a Suzuki GSXR600.

The problem is, my friend has only ever ridden a scooter and hes got his bike like licence next month, but he wants to get either a Yamaha R6 or a Aprilia RSV1000 as his first big bike. I've tried to explain that it would be best starting off on something like a Hornet, but he is having none of it, saying things like "It doesn't matter what bike you have, just don't act daft on it" and "I drive slow so I will ride slow".

I don't want to lecture my mate on it, at the end of the day its up to him. But, I think he should lesten to what Im saying!

Do you think I should but out? Or do you think either of them bikes are ok for a first big bike?

Thanks

Only if he goes the Direct Access route will he be able to get a bike above 33bhp

Almost any sizeable bike, even the 600 hornet, is capable of overpowering a new rider if he/she isn't responsible.

I would suggest you urge your mate, whichever bike he goes for, to get some training first. The police do Bike Safe, which is very good and there are many other schemes for 'new to biking' folk. The IAM is also a good organisation to join and do some accompanied riding.

He will end up killing himself with one of those. Too much power for a starter. Yea he will drive slow but its just a matter of time when he feels comfortable and just go WOT down the road.

your smart, and if you dont want your friend getting hurt, make sure you get it in his stupid little head that starting big is the way to the grave or hospital for sure...

NO I DO NOT THINK YOU SHOULD BUTT OUT
====================================

hey your mate should wake up and realise what a good friend he as with sound advice.. and care..

a 600cc is a good after test bike to gain experiance on and to start learning to ride..

try adviseing him that anythink bigger than that and he is going to get stung high on the insurance as a new rider etc etc
its not a matter of acting daft ITS CAN YOU RESIST THE NEED TO TWIST THAT THROTTLE AND ALSO THE OTHER DAFT IDIOTS THAT ARE ON OUR ROADS.

also tell him does he realise how much power he as on a biger bike its like 10 times as much as a scooter as the b.h.p is a lot lot different yes the throtle twists back the same distance on all bikes put THE POWER is going to be far greater.

tell your friend you dont want to loose him tell him to take your advice get some experiance behind him get some no claims discount then after all that go up in cc its just as much fun for him and you want to go out with rides together and that you dont want to follow him in the back of a ambulance and the only people on the roads today that drive slow is THE HEARSE DRIVER.

you got a good head on your shoulders you talk sense and im sure you will make him see sense... good luck with your chat to him ... and safr rideing to you both.

he might want one, but he sure as hell cant have one... hes passed his teast, and then hes got to wait 2yrs, and pass another test beofre he can get a suerbike... yes the govt are miserable old sods, who have never been young... but, all they want to do is stop your mate squishing himself... coz its them whove got to organise the clean up...

and you, as a seasoned biker ought to kick his impatient ass... its doesnt matter what he thinks.... in fact from personal excperience, bikers dont think, they rack it back and hold on tight!

oh, me... well i had my first bike at 16... 10yrs later i got sideswiped by some twat in a car... end result, wheelchair... missing a leg... and a seriously mangled right arm... but no, thats wasnt enough... within a year i was back on a GS1000... 4yrs later i became an above knee amputee... (my prothesis literally snapped the condials off my femur.)

but hey, ive still got a 1000cc BMW K100rs... and i still ride it... which is a luxury a few of my dead mates no longer have... one mates a paraplegic and another a quadraplegic...

dont be in such a rush to die...
