Whenever someone I know is pregnant (or wife/girlfriend is pregnant), I always try to have a casual and brief conversation about circumcision. While I am against circumcision, I'm not pushy with people. I just think that a lot of people make the decision to circumcise their boys without knowing enough about it. I respect their decision, but I want them to know that it's rarely medically necessary. My wife thinks I shouldn't bring it up with people. I think people don't talk about it enough. What do you guys think; should I bring it up with expectant parents. Obviously, I discuss it only with friends I feel close to.
Incidentally, I discussed it with my nephew some years ago; his wife just had a boy and they decided to not circumcise him. If I hadn't discussed it with him, I'm not sure he would have given it any thought.
Is it impolite to discuss it?
It is NOT healthier to be cut. People spreading outdated misinformation is one reason why I feel so strongly about talking about it. Smegma produced under the foreskin actually has been shown to have antibacterial properties. Studies showing uncut penises at higher risk for disease have been debunked. An unwashed penis is dirty whether it's cut or not.
You want Jr. to look like his dad? How often are dad and Jr. naked together? If dad is missing a finger, do you cut off Jr.'s finger or simply explain the difference? If dad is bald, do you shave Jr.'s head?
People actually justified in their posts that the pain is short-lived? When did the brevity of pain justify the infliction of it? If I slap your face, it will only hurt for a little while, but I'll bet you'd have me arrested for battery. But slicing off half the skin on a kid's penis, that's OK?
