Is it ok to add urethane reducer to urethane clear coat for my car?

The clear coat container only says to add (4 parts clear) to 1 part activator, but the end result is so thick still that it created a terrible orange peel. So i added a small amount of reducer (same brand) and it flowed out much nicer. (I tried it on the gas cap as a test) The reducer evaporates anyway, so whats the hurt?
