Let down by love

relashionship break up? I am dating my boyfriend for 3 months now. After some time he was very honest with me and told me that his 2 year realtionship ended just recently. He also told me that his ex gf is trying to get him back. Just recently he told me that he has to be there for her because she does not have anyone else apart him and does not see her future without him. Therefore he has to be there for her and help her out, although nothing in our relationship changes and he is still very much into me. How should i take this? He leaves her and she comes on his shoulder to cry to? Is it normal? I am not sure what should i do - tell that this is wrong and demand to choose what he wants to comfort - his past or future? Or just give it time, which is very difficult already and trust that what is happening between them is over. Again - in 5 months time - when she needs him - will he leave me in the bed and go to her and i have to understand this? what should i do to protect myself?
