Is it normal for a white structure to be protruding from the wound caused

by tooth extraction? I have just recently gotten four of my teeth removed and I noticed a white slightly stone shaped structure placed in the center of one of the wounds.
The teeth that were pulled were permanent teeth, and the structure seems to be very soft. I fear that it is some sort of infection.
