Is it necessary to have a hood on a 40 gallon fish tank?

Just purchased a used aquarium from a pet store and the owner told me that a hood is not necessary as the light can straddle across the top.

Many species of fish will jump out if given the chance. Also, a hood helps keep the water from evaporating too quickly. Eventually, the spatter and moisture from the tank is going to corrode the light fixture.

I say purchase a hood. Just find one that can fit with your light.

you really do need a hood to keep the water from evaporating, to keep the temperature at a certain degree or else your heater is working more than it needs to and to keep the fish from junping out.

yeah, i'd top it. it'll help with filtration and keep out contaminants like cleaning supplies, bugs or dust that aren't really good for a controlled habitat. the light can sit across the top, but over time water and dust will damage it. if you're really against tops, just put some screen over it so at least whatever you have in there can't escape and the light won't ever fall in.
