Well that helps but not what I was hoping for :) I am worried about future problems for sure....I am 44 today!:jester: and trying to figure my odRAB...I am over weight and working on it with some success.

Happy birthday! :bouncing:

Like momz said, with these back issues, there's generally no win/win situation. You have to try to make the best decision you can and just take the utmost care of yourself. You can't "cheat" and decide that you can do this or that, lift this or that, etc., when you know you shouldn't. (Yes, that's the voice of experience. :()

It's a hard decision to make. Generally, you're going to know when it's time to go ahead with the surgery.

Hang in there!

Is it likely for a fusion to create more of a problem on the other vertibrae in your back that haven't had anything done? Im mean is it going to be a snowball effect on the vertibrae just above or below the fusion? Is there any statistics on this?

Hi Devon and welcome to the board! I hope you find what you are looking for-the people are very supportive and always around!

I don't know where you could find stats without searching some then averaging what you find. Its true there can be a domino effect. If you follow through on physical therapy and keep your core muscles strong to support your back, keep your weight down to lessen stress on your back, and follow to the letter what your doctor tells you there is a much better chance of this not happening.

Good luck with your search!

I have not had a fusion....yet. But my Orthopedic Surgeon told me because of my age (35), he can guarantee future issues with my spine as a result of a fusion.

Im going to have it done....(two level fusion) my back is so far gone even if its fixed I dont think I will use it like I have when I was a younger pup. (feeling old today) lol Thanks blue for the b-day wish It was nice today. My back can handle this surgery and I think its the right move I will take much better care of myself.....the only thing thats hard is the fact if I pass on lifting my wife will attempt to do it....so I just do it now. Im making her a deal to not lift for me or it will cause me to lift. My son is getting older and can start to do things to help.

Thank you all for the help!

Hi, I have friend [removed] . She had scoliosis as a girl and had back fusion when she was 11yo. She's 30 now and has not had further problems above or below her fused vertebrae. I was thrilled when she shared this with me. I had back and neck surgery this year, but my fusion was in my neck, not back (my back was a lami). Even so, I worried about the future weakening b/c of my own fusion. It was a boost to hear from someone I knew that her experience was one of the better outcomes. I hope it helps you to hear this, too.

Everyone told me it is possible and i am dreading it beings i do not want to have more surgery. I had PLIF n 2002 and anterior/posterior fusion in 2008.

Avoiding it completely also greatly increases the possibility of permanent nerve damage from impingment. Its not a win-win situation and I didn't mean to bear false hope. I do know some people though, from these boarRAB, that have gone 20+ years without a second surgery because they took care of themselves.
