Is it legal to hike in China?

I want to hike around China on my own (or with my friend if he'll come) i.e. not on a guided tour. Is this legal? Am I going to have to jump through 19million hoops before the authorities let me? Will my visa be too restrictive?

I wouldn't. Not safe in many areas.
