I recently moved into a townhouse in Va with a fenced in back yard. At the back of our yard we have a gate that exits next to a series of condos. These townhouses have been here since the mid 90s and the condos were built later on. Apparently when the condos were built the construction company responsible went along the fence line and built little fences covering each gate that exits from the townhouses. The back yards of all the condos are also fenced in and there is a gap between the fences of at least ten feet. I find the fences covering the gates to be a hazard if there is a fire and the only available exit is through the back yard. I'm wondering if blocking a gate like that is legal considering the condos are all also fenced in.
Is it legal to block off a gate of an existing property with new development?
