Is it legal for the US government to use the Army and Marines to suppress riots?

I understand that the National Guard is allowed to suppress riots. I was under the impression that the Army and Marines were forbidden from engaging US citizens on US soil to suppress riots, but I just read that they were involved in suppressing the LA riots in 1992.

Does anyone know what the current laws are?
 
It is my understanding that you are correct. They are not allowed to be used against our own citizens. My understand of their role in LA was in the recovery efforts to ensure security. The police were rounding up people, but the military was just supposed to be providing the boats and helicopters.
 
Dunno the details, but something called the Posse Comitatus Act prevented the government from using military troops against citizens on U.S. soil. I'm understanding that it expired or was repealed. A few times, from what I get, so it doesn't seem to be a permanent restriction.
 
They have weapons that we are not 'legally' allowed to have, any questions?

The second amendment was made so that we the people may have the same weapons as our government in order to protect ourselves from them. That way politics wouldn't get in the way and create such a monopoly on violence as the government has done.
