indigent? I got very sick in February and had to have several thousand dollars of mri/mra tests, neurological exams, blood work, etc. The insurance company paid 80%, and when I was admitted at the public hospital, I told them that I only made $8000 a year and was a full-time college student. They said no problem, that they could work out a payment plan. They sent me a huge package to fill out and mail back, which I did. Now, I have a delinquent notice on my credit report and my credit went from 720 to 554 in three months, and that is the only thing that has changed on my account. When I called the collections company to work out a payment plan, they refused to accept what I could afford to pay (they wanted $100 a month, which is almost a weeks pay for me). The hospital claims that they never got the package back, which is why they turned over my account.

I can't apply for any student loans now, and I don't have ANYONE who can co-sign with me (I have no parents, and my husband was laid off; we are living on his savings and my little paycheck). If they knew I was indigent when I was admitted, is it legal for them to do this??

Please don't tell me to pay my bills or get another job. I am in law school and I am taking a full load, and trying to take care of my husband and I on a very limited budget. I pay ALL of my bills on time, and IN FULL. I just can't afford a $4000 medical bill!
