My daughter went for a dental check up, and the professional dentist fully expected her to agree to have fillings put into two molars which were perfectly all right, but because of the shape of the narrowing "valley" depression, he said that they needed filling. He also said her front teeth, which look perfectly all right, needed covering with caps? or something like that, to cover the little ridges that are quite normal to form on front teeth. To me, this is cosmetic treatment, and there must be a trade off between the long term damage done to drilling into teeth for unnecessary fillings, and the cultural social benefits of having "perfect teeth". Why have treatment when you don’t need it, I say leave well alone! Two aspects come in here for me, and they are, that he is making money out of the work, and that he has taken on board the concept of cosmetic surgery, which here in the UK, used to be a negative behaviour, but which now, has been overturned to be seen as a positive behaviour. I really want to know, how to help her obtain real good treatment, which treats the actual teeth, when they need it, and not the social values and stigmas and prejudices of a uniform society which highly esteems the "perfect body" . Is there any regulatory body that we can complain to? It makes me wonder how many others are getting unnecessary and harmful treatment. I shall be very grateful for your answers to this, Thankyou.
