Is it just me or is S.E. Hinton an absolutely awful writer?

I had to suffer through The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now in my literature class at school. I found them tolerable at best, but for the most part I thought they were awful. Is it just me, or is she really as horrendous as I think she is?

(Disclaimer: I am not some ignorant philistine, I just cannot stand her writing.)
