Is it just me or do these word's passages have no context clues?

For school, I have to found the context clues for the words: Furtive, Cowering, Rifling, Doctrines, and Oppress; meaning, I have to find the context that tells me the meaning of those words. But these passages don't look like they have any context clues for the words.
