Is it illegal to take a discreet photo of someone in public in the U.S.?

For example, can I use my camera phone to take a picture of someone I see on the street. If they ask me to remove the picture, am I obligated to do so?

What about if I posted it on the internet?

I have no intention of doing this, I'm just curious.
