That depends on what is more valuable and important to you. A $30-$40 Giro or Bell helmet or brain injury for life (sudden hit by a young driver or even by a pedestrian ) ?

In Virgina you need a helmet if you are under 15 years old. Some cities can change that to every one if they wish so you need to check on the local laws just to be safe.

Actually it is age 14 in VA. That age and under is required to wear a helmet. 15 and up it is not mandatory.
