If you have played sports in the past, then I think it is a good idea to play sports. If you have never picked up a tennis racket in your life and decide to join the tennis team, don't be surprised to find other team members annoyed. If you haven't played a sport before, but are genuinely interested, then I suggest becoming a manager of the team. This way you can ask for pointers from players/coaches and work on your skills outside of their practice time, while still remaining an integral part of the team. Summer camps are beneficial in this respect.
However, it is always a positive thing to be involved in athletics, arts, student senate, music, ect., so find something that interests you and become involved. These organizations are a great way to earn friends as well as benefit your future (applying for college, jobs, ect).
