is it free to swicth a phone on sprint?

If you have one phone, & its broke or whatever the case may be, & you don't want pay the hellacious repair bill, but have a perfectly good phone, can you just reactivate that one & not worry about paying? Does it cost to de-activate the other?
Stupid question: How do i get my SIM card out?
