A large company or university will offer employment benefits to s/s couples and married but what about singles with significant others? Perhaps they are doing the responsible thing by waiting and for whatever reason (no business of the company/university), they want to wait.
Also, what about related couples who are in a long term relationship (again, no business of the company/university what that relationship is) but because they're related, they don't qualify. (Maybe they are first cousins but aren't planning children-whatever, doesn't matter what the reason).
