You will get a different answer from every person you talk to pretty much. but i happen to think it adds a nice touch to the aquarium i have a scuba diver holding a treasure chest and then i have a skull and the skull has openings where the fish can hide inside of it and there is always a fish in there so i definitely think that they like it a lot!!!

Depends on the type of fish. With most, you don't NEED ornaments, but if you get fish that need a place to hide or are very territorial, they are a must. I have african cichlids, and my tank has many many many ornaments and decorations so that each fish can have his/her own territory and place of safety.

...differing opinions? I just bought a new tank yesterday as i am keen to start keeping fish as a hobby. I have read many articles and spoke to a few people who have differing opinions as to wether ornaments are essential. i have gravel and live plants in my tank so do i need the ornaments?

depending on the type of fish you wish to keep, if you are planning on keeping a fish that needs plenty of hiding you may want to add an ornament or two if you don't have very many plants. otherwise no ornaments is perfectly fine.

Most of the time ornaments are more for the owner than the fish, but they do add a nice personal touch to any aquarium.
