hi,

going to be a new palm user, just a quick question with regards to its PIM apps.

I'm going to use its PIM function heavily, so i guess its only a matter of time before i invest in some better third party PIM apps. However, i'll be using its default first, so that i'll be in a better position to choose the apps that will be most suited for my use.

Now, the question. is it going to be easy to switch later on? Will these apps provide an easy way to transfer the data to the new apps? I wouldn't like to have to manually transfer the data whwnever i want to change my app.

Thanks!

The two most popular third party PIM applications are DateBk5 and Agendus. Both make use of the four standard PIM databases so it is easy to switch later on.

I have stated this many a time:

Agendus is the best contact manager software for the Palm - period.

Datebk5 is the best calendar program.

What do those two statements mean: Agendus handles calendar, tasks and contacts without additional databases taking up a bunch of room and while still looking similar to the "core" PIM applications but providing tons of features. You can see contact history such as any tasks that were performed with a customer that's listed in your contacts.

Datebk5 requires "links" to get the same functionality and these links are more of a manual process. You also don't have the same functionality with interacting amongst the Task, Contacts and Calendar portions of the native PIMs.

Ok, you can find agendus at: www.iambic.com and Datebk5 at www.pimlicosoftware.com . Both can be used in trial form for about 30 days so you can always decide for yourself.

Datebk5 hasn't gone through any major revisions in 2 years...it's virtually unchanged in that time frame other than updates to handle new devices and OS changes.

Agendus has had 4 major revisions in that same time frame and unfortunately upgrades required reinvestment of $9.95 to $19.95 on each major revision, if you wanted that lastest version. Datebk5 did not require any new charges for updates that handled new OS or hardware.

I use Agendus and swear by it because it looks more like the original PIM's but can be configured in more ways then you can imagine. But I like it for the contact information more than anything else. You simply tap on a Contact History icon and you can see everything, task, meeting, call that was done for that contact - datebk5 doesn't have anything that I would consider similar.

Try both - but be advised that Datebk5 encodes it's icon's with a @@@ character set and this will cause conflicts in Agendus because Agendus encodes it's icon with a numerical listing that is more universal.
