Is it cheaper to build your own computer than it is to buy one pre-assembled?

The obvious perks to building your own are that you are in complete control over everything - but if you bought something with the same specs from a company, pre-assembled, would it cost you more? Is it ultimately cheaper to buy parts and assemble yourself?
