is it better to wear a foundation that's one shade too light or one shade too dark?

like if I wasn't sure of my shade at the store, would it be better to get one I thought was lighter or darker? which looks better aesthetically?
i'm talking about drug store/grocery store foundation, when you're unsure

i've been to clinique to get my foundation matched, i didn't like the pink undertone though
