is it better to have small discoveries or big ones?

such as the movie contact with jodie foster no one belived it actually happened

will us as civilans take it if a big discovery happened but didnt come with proof
 
Most humans are not willing to accept change, a big discovery like a machine that teleports you through a worm hole across the universe and back in an instant (such as in this movie/book) wouldn't be accepted easily.

Many people are still raw about the subject of Pluto's demotion.

Small discoveries are easier to take, but you'd be more likely to get your name out there for having a big discovery like Newton's laws of motion and gravity and Einstein's theory of relativity.

(P.S. Carl Sagan, the author, was a genius for coming up with that nature)
