Is it bad for the car to coast with foot all the way down on clutch pedal?

I just started driving a standard car. Scenerio: I am in 4th or 5th gear on a straight country road and see a stop sign 400 feet ahead. Is it bad for the car to press the clutch pedal all the way in and coast to a stop and then begin again in 1st gear? Additionally, is it bad for the car/clutch to have the car in 4th or 5th gear, then push the clutch all the way in (to coast for a while before breaking to turn), and bring the car back in 2nd gear after the turn? Should I be down shifting thru all of that, or is it okay to coast? I really appreciate the help!
