They do not have to let you go. Most prisons generally will, as a courtesy, but they aren't required. In fact, in cases where they believe the inmate might pose a threat in public, they're somewhat required not to let them attend.

It happens sometimes, but there is no right and it is quite rare. It is rate because it is expensive to send guards and such. If you are already in a half way house or work release, it would be easier.

No, freedom of movement is not a right when you are in prison (obviously).

When you commit a crime that lands you in prison, you lose certain rights, and the right to go where you want is number 1.

In many cases, they will allow you an escorted absence for such a situation, but it is not guaranteed, and will depend on a number of factors, such as distance, crime committed, behavior while in prison, etc.

I know someone who was in that situation. His mother was dying and they gave him the option to either visit her alive or go to her funeral. He chose to see her alive but it seems as though that meant they had to do one or the other. However you go in handcuffs from what I was told.

No, not against the law. You can request to attend the funeral, but they have every right to deny the request.

No, that is not a right. If you wanted to be home for dad, you would have behaved and not gone to jail.
